 Women & Estrogen
Suddenly, it seems like everywhere you turn there is a magazine
article, TV program or news alert about estrogen–and it’s usually
controversial. Why all the media focus? Because recent studies
about this female hormone have revealed some disturbing facts
that women–and men–need to know.
The principal results from the Women’s
Health Initiative
In the July 17, 2002, issue of the Journal
of the American Medical Association,
the principal results from the Women’s
Health Initiative were published1. The
study involved 16,608 women who took
estrogen plus progesterone or a placebo
to determine whether postmenopausal-
estrogen replacement would help prevent
heart disease and hip fractures. This study
was also designed to determine whether
there were risks associated with hormonereplacement
therapy. The study was
stopped after five years because the risks
of therapy far outweighed the hope for
benefits.
The results showed
The results showed that estrogen/
progesterone combination therapy produced
a 26% increase in breast cancer, a 41%
increase in strokes, a 29% increase in
heart attacks and double the number of
blood clots in the lungs and legs. The
only positive findings were a reduction
in hip fractures and colorectal cancer. A
second study published in the same issue
of the Journal found that women using only
estrogen replacement were at significantly
increased risk for ovarian cancer2. These
findings frightened millions of women who
have been using estrogen replacement.
The good news
The conclusions of this landmark study are
that women should not be using hormone
replacement to prevent cardiovascular
disease and that women currently on
therapy should reconsider the wisdom of
continuing. The only benefit of estrogen
replacement is to relieve the
symptoms of hot flashes and flushes
that accompany the change of life.
The good news is that there are
natural alternatives that successfully
relieve these symptoms without the
risks associated with prescription
estrogen replacement.
- Natural progesterone delivered
through transdermal cream, like Nature’s Balance Cream, is
one option. In a random trial of
progesterone cream, 83% of the
women receiving the active agent
noted improvement or resolution of
their symptoms compared to only
19% in the placebo group3.
- The consumption of soy, which is
found in many Herbalife products
including Thermojetics® Formula 1 Protein Drink Mix and Low-Carb High-Protein Shake Mix, can significantly reduce the
incidence of hot flashes. A doubleblind
placebo controlled study showed
that hot flashes were reduced by 45%
in women who received 60 grams of
soy protein isolate daily–a significant
improvement over the placebo group,
which achieved only a 30% reduction
in hot flashes.4
- Black cohosh is an
herb that significantly
improves menopausal
symptoms and is
found in Herbalife’s Woman’s Choice. In
several studies it was
established that not only
did black cohosh relieve
symptoms, but did it
better than both placebo
and estrogen.*
The current issues
associated with
pharmacological
approaches to
menopausal symptoms
represent an opportunity
for you to educate your
customers about natural
alternatives.
Healthy Living Programs
Herbalife’s Basic Cellular Nutrition® Program ( Formula 1 Protein Drink Mix, Formula 2 Multivitamin Mineral & Herbal Tablets, Formula 3 Cell Activator ), which

to women in menopause. Woman’s Choice, a sophisticated, natural
product containing a healthy serving
of black cohosh combined with
additional isoflavones derived from
soy, kudzu and red clover, provides an
additional level of protection.* Every
woman should begin, in their mid to
late 30’s, taking one tablet of Woman’s
Choice, but for those who experience
discomfort during menopause, two to
four tablets can be used to relieve any
annoying discomfort.*
