Wellness Report: The Health Problems Associated with Overweight and Obesity
Everywhere you turn there is a new study addressing the
health risks associated with overweight and obesity. In fact,
researchers recently reported that even a slight weight gain can
put your health at risk. I’ve highlighted some of the key obesity related
issues that have appeared in recent months and how
you can use Herbalife’s health and wellness products to help
yourself better manage their weight and reduce the risk
of obesity-related illnesses to achieve optimal health.
Gaining Weight Over a Long Period of Time Causes
Health Problems
American Institute for Cancer Research
The World Health Organization estimates that one-quarter to onethird
of cancer cases are related to being overweight and inactive.
In a recent study performed by the American Institute for Cancer
Research, 1,025 men and women were polled to determine whether
they were aware of a link between obesity and the risk of cancer.
Although most of them knew that obesity raises the risk of contracting
heart disease and diabetes, less than one-quarter of them realized
that being overweight also increased the risk of cancer. Research has
found that weight gain can lead to a higher risk for colon, prostate,
endometrial, esophageal, kidney and post-menopausal breast cancer.
People who gained 22 pounds or more beyond the age of 20 are
especially vulnerable. Excess fat cells function as hormone pumps to
produce higher levels of insulin and estrogen. When this occurs, cells
divide more rapidly. If something in the cell goes awry, the resultant
cancer cell also reproduces and follows a pattern of rapid replication.
Additionally, fat cells trap carcinogens in the body.

A Heart-Healthy Lifestyle May Prevent
Alzheimer’s Disease
The Alzheimer’s Association
The Alzheimer’s Association is exploring the
relationship between healthy aging and reduced
risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Age is the highestranking
risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s,
but reversible risk factors include high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, inactivity
and excess weight, which may contribute to this
degenerative brain disease. Sticky brain deposits
kill off neural cells and disintegrate memory,
leading to disorientation, depression and loss
of cognitive function. High cholesterol narrows
arteries in the body, and possibly in the brain, to
create plaques linked to the death of brain cells.
Because high cholesterol, high blood pressure
and overweight are controllable conditions, it’s
never too late to begin a heart-smart nutrition and
weight-loss program with either Thermojetics® Green Weight-Management Program or Thermojetics® Gold High-Protein, Low-Carb Program. Also, Cardio ToconOx®, Herbalifeline® and Mega Garlic Plus taken daily may help maintain healthy
cholesterol that is already within a normal range.*
Obesity Linked to Gastrointestinal Problems
Internal Medicine News
An increase in gastroesophageal reflux disease,
more commonly known as acid reflux, has been
linked directly to the incidence of obesity. A recent
study presented during Digestive Disease Week
showed that people who registered a high body
mass index (BMI) had more frequent problems
with symptoms associated with acid reflux.
Those with the highest BMI had nearly twice as
many episodes. As BMI numbers increased, pain
occurred more frequently in both the upper and
lower abdomen. A possible explanation for these
findings is that obese people may be ingesting
the wrong types of food or following erratic
eating patterns. The study also documented
a higher incidence of bloating, irregularity and
nausea. Both the Thermojetics® Green Weight-Management Program and Thermojetics® Gold High-Protein, Low-Carb Program are
scientifically formulated
for safe, effective weight loss.* Herbalife also has
many products that can help address problems
associated with acid reflux and ease digestion. Use Active Soluble Fiber Drink Mix and Florafiber-Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Fiber Tablets to provide
natural cleansing during digestion and encourage
the growth of helpful intestinal bacteria.* Herbal
Aloe Vera Drink/Aloe Vera Concentrate is also an excellent aid
for soothing the digestive system and optimizing
intestinal function.
Ginseng Berry May Help Reduce Obesity
Diabetes
A recent study published in the journal Diabetes
suggests that the ginseng berry, which has
long been used to help energize those who are
suffering with cancer and heart failure, may help
reduce obesity. During a 12-day study, a group
of mice who were predisposed to weight gain
and type 2 diabetes were given daily injections
of the ginseng-berry extract. These mice were
able to restore their blood-sugar levels more
quickly than mice who were not given the berry,
and they also shed more than 10% of their body
weight, while the other group gained weight.
While scientists are still studying the effects
of ginseng on weight loss and diabetes, you
can enjoy the benefits of ginseng–one of the
top-selling herbal supplements available–with Herbalife’s Mega Ginseng Blend. It contains a
