A Few Extra Pounds Can Hurt Your Heart
A recent study published in the New England Journal
of Medicine concluded that weight gain can be
dangerous to your heart. Cardiologists have known
for years that obesity can increase the risk of heart
failure indirectly by increasing risk factors such as
diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol.
The study showed that being overweight is in itself a risk
factor for heart failure and gaining weight puts you in a higher risk
group. The risk of heart failure is one-third higher in those who
are overweight and double for those who are obese. Of the nearly
6,000 people who participated in the 15-year study, 11% of men
and 14% of women had heart failure attributable to obesity.
The new findings are alarming because the U.S. population is
rapidly increasing in weight, beginning in childhood.
- 13% of young children are already overweight.
- 14% of adolescents continue to be overweight.
- 61% of adults are overweight and gaining.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States.
