Scientific Backing for Nutritional Supplements
Distributors and customers around the world already know that Herbalife products
are safe, work well and can help improve one’s health. Now medical and scientific
literature is providing unprecedented support that good nutrition, weight loss and
dietary supplementation are the keys to long-term wellness. You can point with
pride to Herbalife being ahead of the curve and constantly providing you, your
family, your friends and your customers with the best nutrition available on earth.
The following are just some of the recent reports that complement Herbalife’s
mission to help improve health through better nutrition.
Overwhelming Obesity Statistics
Nutrition and the M.D.
Journal of the American Medical Association
The Lancet
The February 2002 issue of Nutrition and the M.D. addresses the epidemic of
obesity that is affecting children in the United States.1 The same problem is
discussed in a 2002 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association ,
and in the rest of the world, as evidenced in an article published in a 2001
issue of The Lancet . The authors of these articles correctly observe that neither
the medical practitioner nor the healthcare system is prepared to address the
issue of pediatric obesity.2,3 The prevalence of obesity in children is high and
increasing at an alarming rate. While medical complications from obesity in
childhood are not common, the incidence of Type 2 diabetes in children has
increased tenfold in the last 12 years. The treatment of obesity in children is not
easy and severe dietary restrictions are not appropriate for a growing child. A
great deal of care is necessary in addressing the nutritional needs of growth and
development. The challenge is to educate parents and children as to the evils of
sugar-laden beverages and fatty, fast foods. Good nutritional habits developed
in childhood will protect our children for a lifetime. There is no better way to
promote positive nutrition than the supportive system Herbalife provides. That
means using healthy shakes, either Thermojetics® Formula 1 Protein Drink
Mix or DinoShake®, together with Thermojetics® Formula 2 Multivitamin-
Mineral & Herbal Tablets or Dinomins, supplemented with healthy snacks,
such as Thermojetics® High-Protein, Low-Carb Bars and Thermojetics®
High-Protein, Low-Carb Roasted Soy Nuts with Cardia® Salt.
Children's Diabetes a Growing Concern
The New England Journal of Medicine
The increase in diabetes and impaired tolerance of sugar among obese
children was highlighted in an article in the March 14, 2002 issue of The
New England Journal of Medicine . The authors studied a multiethnic group
of obese children and adolescents.4 They found impaired glucose tolerance,
a precursor to diabetes, in 25 percent of obese children and 21 percent of
the obese adolescents. Moreover, diabetes was identified in four percent of
the obese adolescents. An editorial in the same issue noted 22 percent of
preschool children were overweight and 10 percent were obese.5 They went
on to call childhood obesity, "the most serious and prevalent nutritional disease
in the United States." Yet the challenge of obesity and childhood diabetes is
not restricted to the United States. In Japan,
from 1976 to 1995, the incidence of Type 2
diabetes increased from .2 to 7.3 children
per 100,000 per year. The epidemic of
childhood obesity is a challenge that Herbalife
is confronting with education and our healthy
nutritional products.
Warning: Obesity Can Seriously
Damage Your Health
UCLA Rand Report
British Journal of Public Health
A recent study from UCLA Rand found that the
health dangers and health costs associated
with obesity far outweigh those associated with
tobacco or alcohol use. The study compared
10,000 adults in the U.S. and found that people
who are obese have 30 to 50 percent more
chronic medical problems than smokers or
problem drinkers. It also found that obesity
raises a person’s healthcare costs by 36
percent and medication costs by 77 percent,
as compared to smoking, which leads to a
21 percent rise in healthcare costs and a 28
percent increase in medication costs. This
confirms a previous report published in the
British Journal of Public Health which stated
that obesity was more detrimental than alcohol,
smoking or even poverty. The opportunity for
Herbalife to change the lives of people, the
public and the economic health of society has
never been greater.
Fiber for Fitness and Immunity The Archives of Internal
Medicine The American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition
Fiber supplementation can have many benefits on the gastrointestinal system.
In a study published in the August 2001 issue of The Journal of the American
College of Nutrition , arabinogalactan, a non-digestible, soluble dietary fiber,
was evaluated for its impact on the digestive process.6 Increases in good
bacteria and a reduction of ammonia levels in the bowel were demonstrated.
This data showed that dietary arabinogalactan has a positive effect on the
gastrointestinal flora, which helps regulate your digestive health. In a study
published in March 2002 in The Journal of Nutrition , an animal model in dogs
demonstrated beneficial effects on digestive physiology and improved immune
status.7 Arabinogalactan, derived from the larch tree, is a powerful component
of Herbalife’s unique Active Fiber supplement. Active Fiber can be mixed
into any liquid without affecting the flavor, improving the biochemistry of the
digestive tract and enhancing immune function.
Ginkgo for "Senior Moments" Neuropsychobiology
Biofactors
Ginkgo is a respected herb that has been shown, in numerous studies, to
improve memory, while reducing cognitive decline seen in many aging people.
In a recently published issue of Neuropsychobiology , the benefits of ginkgo
biloba were again shown not only to improve cognitive performance but also
to improve social functioning.8 The improvement was most easily observed
in those with mild impairments. In an article recently published in Biofactors,
ginkgo’s antioxidant effect was demonstrated by its ability to increase cellular
levels of glutathione,9 an important part of the body’s internal antioxidant
protective system. Herbalife’s Ultimate Ginkgo contains the most powerful
extract available, combined with two lipids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and
phosphatidylserine (PS), designed to protect the cells of the brain.*
Nutrients for Improved Eyesight The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Nutritional supplementation appears to protect against the development of
cataracts, which account for the most common operation performed under
Medicare. In an article published in the March 2002 issue of The American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition , the experience of a group of women, aged 53
to 73 was analyzed. It was found that daily supplementation with vitamin
C reduced the incidence of cataracts by approximately 60 percent.10 This
article provides additional support regarding the importance of vitamin
supplementation in the reduction of common age-related cataracts. By
consuming Thermojetics® Formula 1 Protein Drink Mix, and the superb
Thermojetics® Formula 2 Multivitamin-Mineral & Herbal Tablets, plus
Ocular Defense Formula, you can guarantee that you or your customers will
receive at least the 362 mgs. of vitamin C a day associated with promoting
ocular health.* For additional vitamin C, Extreme C is an ideal choice. With
proper supplementation, the common causes of visual loss or surgery can be
significantly reduced.
