Diabetes and Latinos A Community At Risk
Diabetes is not an equal opportunity disease. It hits some
ethnic groups particularly hard, especially Latinos who
enjoy a diet high in carbohydrates. On average, Latinos
are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than non-Latin
Caucasian Americans. Statistics show that one out of
every 10 Latinos has, or will, develop diabetes, while the
rate for the average population is one in 20.
Diabetes has far-reaching effects
It’s currently estimated that 12 percent of Latinos in the United
States have obesity-related Type 2 diabetes. As the Hispanic
population continues to grow, the prevalence of diabetes
and obesity among Latinos is expected to reach epidemic
proportions. Studies have found that Latinos with diabetes have higher rates of
complications such as kidney disease, eye disease and heart diseases, to
name a few, and will end up spending more on health care as they age.
Why is this happening? Three key factors are involved:
- Genetics
- Lifestyle
- Access to care
Conquering obesity
Maintaining a healthy weight is the first step in the prevention of diabetes. The
problems associated with obesity-related diabetes must be more closely
examined. Conquering obesity would greatly reduce the number of people with
diabetes and curb the devastating complications and costs associated with the
disease.
Increasing awareness
It’s important that community-based efforts are intensified to increase awareness
of blood-sugar control to prevent health complications. Through early detection
and treatment, regular exercise and a healthy diet, Latinos with diabetes can
prevent or delay the serious complications of the disease.
Turning to Herbalife
Fortunately, at Herbalife, we have a variety of nutritional supplements that can help
achieve the aforementioned goals. Programs such as the Thermojetics® Gold
High-Protein, Low-Carb Program fulfill most nutritional needs and can help one
lose weight progressively. With weight loss, blood-sugar levels often improve.
Herbalife products that support heart health and the immune system may be
beneficial for diabetics as well. Be sure to have your doctor monitor your bloodsugar
levels throughout weight loss, as you may need to make adjustments.
