An increase in gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as acid reflux, has been linked directly to the incidence of obesity. A recent study presented during Digestive Disease Week showed that people who registered a high body mass index (BMI) had more frequent problems with symptoms associated with acid reflux. Those with the highest BMI had nearly twice as many episodes. As BMI numbers increased, pain occurred more frequently in both the upper and lower abdomen. A possible explanation for these findings is that obese people may be ingesting the wrong types of food or following erratic eating patterns.
